COMMUNITY HEALTH Team:
Give us a call if you are concerned about an older person. Information and advocacy available. ABUSE and NEGLECT PREVENTION: Confidential service aimed at improving the quality of life of older people in abusive situations. Refer to Kerry, Sarah or Lynne. EDUCATION/AWARENESS: Resources, publications, lectures, network meetings and talks.
FRIENDLY Visitors (AVS):
A service for isolated older people, living alone. The aim is for a volunteer to establish a friendship with an older person by spending exclusive quality time with him/her on a regular basis. Orientation and on going support is provided.
HOME SUPPORT SERVICES:
Gardening, Hairdressing, Home Help, Window cleaning, Meal preparation, Sitters, SHOPPING, Sleepovers, footcare, TRADESMEN and HANDYMEN at reasonable rates. Someone for every job about the home including appliance repair, rail fitting and plumbing needs.
OUTINGS – Minibus:
Regular minibus outings provide a door-to-door service for those interested in meeting others in their area and for those wanting a change of scenery.
Also regular coffee groups meet at local cafes and enjoy the social contact.

PUBLICATIONS – Full range of brochures, Keeping On – quarterly newspaper available 3 monthly with a $15.00 annual subscription or it can be picked up at your local Service Centre. Other helpful publications available.

POSITIVE AGEING EXPO – Held on the first Monday of the school holidays at Papanui High School. In 2016 it is to be held on September 26, 9.30am-2.30pm at Papanui High School. A caterpillar bus will take the public from the Sawyers Arms Road gates through to the gymnasium where the exhibits start. Parking for cars is available at the rear of the school. Access is well marked. The day presents over 120 exhibitors offering services and information for older adults and their families. Entertainment throughout the day. Food and beverage available to purchase. Light refreshments free.
Refresher Course for Mature Drivers:
Refresh older drivers knowledge of road rules and address the issue of driving behaviour.
There is a $10 charge for the course and morning tea and lunch is provided. Courses are co-ordinated by Yvonne Palmer. Lunch is provided by Age Concern Canterbury.
Three further courses may be available:
Life without a car- Two hour course to increase awareness of the effects of ageing on our ability and confidence on the road, look at alternatives to driving, increase our awareness of services and entitlements that may help and encourage participants to overcome barriers and remain active in the community.
Home and Personal Safety – Now 2 hour courses held in conjuction with Police, Fire Service, Civil Defence, Neighbourhood support.
Mobility Scooter Safety – Two hour course looking at safety issues.

STAY ON YOUR FEET – Steady as you go ( SAYGO ) exercise classes for strength and balance to prevent falls.
