The Office was established in 1990, and is part of the Ministry of Social Development.
Their role is to:
* promote the rights and interests of older people
* lead, monitor and promote the New Zealand Positive Ageing Strategy
* provide policy advice on issues that affect older people, and lead strategic and cross-sectoral policy
* support the Minister for Senior Citizens.
